llms.txt for stores: the 20-minute implementation guide

Direct answer: llms.txt is a markdown file at your domain root that gives AI agents a curated, human-written map of your store: what you sell, for whom, your best pages, and your policies. It takes 20 minutes, costs nothing, and it's the one place where you write the summary agents read — instead of hoping they infer it.

The five mistakes that make agents ignore your llms.txt

  1. Marketing copy instead of facts. "World-class comfort reimagined" tells an agent nothing. "$349, wide-fit, 30-day returns" gets you selected.
  2. Dumping every URL. That's the sitemap's job. Curate 15–30 links that answer buyer questions.
  3. Letting it go stale. Wrong prices in llms.txt are worse than no llms.txt — inconsistency is a trust penalty. Regenerate it when your catalog changes.
  4. Serving HTML. It must be plain markdown text. A common failure: your 404 page returns HTML with status 200, and agents read soup.
  5. Blocking crawlers anyway. llms.txt is useless if robots.txt blocks GPTBot and ClaudeBot from reading it. Access first (checklist, step 1).

20-minute implementation plan

  1. (5 min) Fill in the template above with your top collections, policies and 3–5 best sellers.
  2. (5 min) Upload it: Shopify — a small app or theme asset route; anything static — drop the file in your public root.
  3. (2 min) Open yourstore.com/llms.txt in an incognito tab — confirm plain text, correct facts.
  4. (3 min) Verify crawler access and everything else with a free AgentReady scan.
  5. (5 min) Add "regenerate llms.txt" to your catalog-change checklist. Stale is the silent killer.
